For Parents
You are your child’s strongest protection
Notice early, talk calmly, and act together. You don’t need to be an expert.
Warning signs to watch for
One sign alone proves nothing. Look for a pattern lasting more than a week or two.
Big changes in sleep — awake for days, then sleeping all day
New friends they won’t introduce
Missing money or valuables at home
Falling grades or skipping school
Sudden anger, secrecy or low mood
Weight loss or loss of appetite
How to talk to your child
1
Pick a calm moment
Not in anger, not in front of others. A drive or a walk works well.
2
Say what you noticed
“I’ve seen you sleeping less and I’m worried.” Facts, not blame.
3
Listen more than you speak
Let them finish. Ask open questions. Silence is okay.
4
Keep the door open
End with love: “Whatever happens, I’m on your side.”
